“Investing in the Culture We Want: How the Death Penalty Shortchanges Public Safety”

Many people are now aware that the death penalty costs far more than life in prison without the possibility of parole.  But what they don’t think about is all of the other programs that could be supported with those cost savings — programs that actually work to promote public safety.  Join us for a panel discussion about the costs of the death penalty, and the way that money could be better spent to support mental health programs, victims’ services, and more effective law enforcement.

 

Panelists:

• Dr. Michael Birzer of Wichita State University, Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Wichita State University;
• Heather Cessna, Executive Director of Kansas Board of Indigent Defense Services;
• Roger Werholtz, retired Secretary of Corrections for the Kansas Department of Corrections; and
• Sr. Mary Lex Smith, SCL, who served as a victim advocate for sixteen years.
