2026 Kansas Legislature and the Death Penalty
January 12th marked the start of the 2026 legislative session. Repeal: SB 245 and HB 2272 carried over into the 2026 session. Both would repeal the death penalty for crimes on or after the effective date of the legislation. The penalty for the most serious murders in Kansas would be life in prison without parole. The bills are in the House and Senate Judiciary Committees. The fact that Kansas has a death penalty is not a “no harm no foul” situation. At the December 8th virtual annual meeting, there will be election of officers and board members. The terms begin January 1, 2026 and are for 2 years. The nominee slate is: Chair: Donna Schneweis, Secretary: Willmar Harder; and Board of Directors: Sr. Therese Bangert, Chris Pumpelly, Rev. Mike Poage, and Madilyn Chupp. The annual meeting is December 8th at 7:30 p.m. It is an online event. To register for the meeting, click here.
